At the end of the '80s, Fiemme's candidature to the FIS Nordic Skiing World Championships was put forward. This idea was born out of the valley's great interest in cross-country skiing.
The FIS Nordic Ski World Championships are then assigned to Val di Fiemme in 1991: it is the first time that this event was held in Trentino, a region South of the Alps located in the Mediterrean basin; a place wherte - to quote then president of the Organising Committee, Giorgio Tononi - "during the summer the lemon trees bloom and the olive trees prosper."
Since then, the valley has never stopped. The first FIS World Cup took place in 1990. Since then, the international races organized in Val di Fiemme have been more than 400.
The 1991, 2003 and 2013 editions of the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships have all been organized in Val di Fiemme, alongside the Junior & U23 Fiemme 2014 World Championships and the Roller Ski World Championships in 2015 and in 2021.
Val di Fiemme was also the protagonist of the 2013 Winter Universide in Trentino, hosting not only the nordic disciplines (i.e., cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and nordic combined), but also biathlon, figure skating and ice hockey.
